Recollections of a 20-year-old

Spring of a 20-year-old

Achievement unlocked: Congratulations Loewe Chan! You are now Level 2.

So it finally happened. I finally hit the big two-oh.

I am twenty-years old! I can’t believe it. I mean… I believe it, of course. I saw it coming as my age grew closer and closer to that number. But nevertheless, it still somehow managed to catch me off guard. I mean really… twenty! It feels like I’m already hitting the mid-life crisis. Is twenty the new fifty, perhaps?

And so I sat down and I tried to comprehend in my head how I got to where I am today. And I completely got immersed into memories of my own childhood. And I just began to remember…

To Mama Chan

Mother's Day 2013

People say I look like my mother. Every time I go back to visit relatives or meet my parents’ friends in Hong Kong, they always bring up our resemblance. Even my mother herself agrees that we look alike. She was especially surprised when she saw my new passport photo that was retaken this year. When she saw it, she exclaimed, “You look exactly like my old passport photo!”

Surprisingly enough, it was through my first-year criminology course (elective choice) that I was able to understand exactly how all these events unfolded. In learning about corporate crime, my professor showed us a documentary directed by Alex Gibney titled “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room” (2005).

I know what you guys are thinking…

To Papa Chan for his Birthday

Papa Chan's Birthday

March has been pretty darn busy between midterms and final papers. But I guess that isn’t a good enough excuse to forget my dad’s birthday.

I didn’t forget this year! But my family has forgotten my dad’s birthday more than once. And now it has become one of those funny stories we bring up every time March rolls around. It is also one of those things that resurfaces if my father is losing his side in an argument.

The sad thing is that my mother, sister, and I all know the date of my dad’s birthday. But on the day of, we forget.  The very first time we forgot his birthday was…
